Strong Call for a Balanced, Value-Based Education System

Chashirhat, Sonaimuri, Noakhali – What was once an educationally deprived remote village now proudly hosts one of the finest educational institutions in the region: Chashirhat Nurul Haque High School. On Thursday, 11 December 2025, the school premises turned into a festive ground as hundreds of parents, students, and local dignitaries gathered for the grand Parents’ Assembly, an event that felt more like a community festival than a routine meeting.

The programme began at 10 a.m. with recitation from the Holy Qur’an, followed by the national anthem and the hoisting of the national flag.

British Colonial Education System: The Root Cause of Today’s Moral Decay

Presiding over the event, School Managing Committee President and Chief Patron Hossain Mohammad Selim delivered a thought-provoking keynote address on the deep crisis in the current education system and the way forward.

He stated: “To build a truly developed and prosperous nation, every citizen must receive proper and elevated education. Yet today we see a tragic paradox: the higher the academic degree a person obtains, the greater the tendency toward corruption. The primary reason is that we are still following the British colonial education system. The British designed this system to produce obedient ‘clerks’ (clerks) who would serve their empire, and that very framework remains almost unchanged even after eight decades of independence. Similarly, the madrasa system they introduced to create scholars loyal to them has also seen no fundamental reform.”

Mr Selim expressed his vision clearly: “We want a single, balanced, unified education system in which every student will, on one hand, be firmly grounded in Islamic knowledge and moral values and, on the other hand, will achieve excellence in modern science, technology, languages, and vocational skills.”

Addressing the Plight of Unskilled Migrant Workers

Highlighting a pressing local issue, he pointed out that thousands of young men from Chashirhat and surrounding areas migrate abroad every year as unskilled labourers and are forced to sell their labour at extremely low wages due to lack of technical training. He gave a firm commitment to establish vocational training institutes and even a university in the area so that the youth of this region can go abroad as skilled, high-earning professionals rather than cheap labour.

Founder’s Emotional Recollection

School founder and former Union Parishad Chairman Nurul Haque became emotional while sharing memories: “There used to be no secondary school in our entire area. Parents had to hire vehicles to send their children to Sonaimuri or Bipulashar. My own children have completed their education; they don’t need this school. I established this institution solely for the children of my village. Today, seeing this dream come true fills my heart with joy.”

Remarkable Achievements in a Remote Village

Headmaster Rashidul Hasan proudly presented the school’s journey. Despite being located in a remote rural area, the school is served by highly qualified, energetic young teachers who graduated from reputed universities across the country. Research departments modelled on university standards have been introduced, and special coaching programmes such as “Home Care”, “Special Care”, and “Night Care” are offered according to students’ needs and merit.

At the end of the programme, meritorious students who secured 1st, 2nd, and 3rd positions in the annual examination were awarded prizes. This was followed by a captivating cultural show in which students performed patriotic songs, short plays, drama, and comedy skits, and left the audience spellbound.

The Chashirhat Nurul Haque High School has already earned a reputation not only for academic excellence but also for sports, cultural activities, and creative development, despite being only a few years old.

The Core Message of the Assembly

The gathering sent out one unmistakable message: We no longer want the British colonial “clerk-producing” education system. We want a new, balanced education system that produces morally upright, Islamically educated, technologically skilled, and ethically strong citizens who will be an asset to the nation and a pride for the Ummah.

This parents’ assembly was not merely an annual event; it was a powerful declaration that real development of the nation begins with real, value-based, and balanced education.
