Before the 1800s, the United States was not as powerful and expansive as it is today. At that time, the country consisted of only 13 states, primarily located along the eastern coast. There was no direct connection between the U.S. and what is now British Columbia in Canada; it was then a British colony.
Prior to 1776, the United States was governed as a British colony and had no significant position in global politics. After gaining independence, the national leaders of the country took initiatives to build a unified and strong state. Gradually, different regions joined, and the number of states in the U.S. began to increase. By 1877, the number of states had reached 38. Later, in 1959, Alaska (purchased from Russia in 1867) and Hawaii joined, bringing the total number of states to 50.
These 50 states, together, have made the United States politically, economically, and militarily powerful. Through its natural resources, national wealth, and the combined efforts of its people, the U.S. eventually emerged as one of the world's leading superpowers.
In World War I, the United States effectively used its collective strength and played a crucial role. Supporting the Allied powers, especially France and Britain, it changed the course of the war. As a result, Germany was defeated, and the U.S. emerged as a major power on the world stage. The U.S. also played a vital role in World War II. In 1945, by dropping atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki it forced Japan to surrender. Behind this success were their organized unity, planning, and the strength of national solidarity.
Britain once ruled a vast empire. England, Scotland, Wales, and Ireland together formed the United Kingdom. This unity was the foundation of their power. At one point, this powerful empire controlled nearly one-fourth of the world. Similarly, many powerful nations of the world have clearly reflected the concept of unity in their very names.
For example, the United States of America (USA) – where “United” signifies unity. Likewise, the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) – the word “Union” symbolizes togetherness. The same applies to the United Kingdom – again, the word “United” is used. You’ll notice that all three countries use the term “United” or a similar concept, indicating that multiple regions or states have come together to form one unified nation.
Therefore, it is a proven truth that only those who are united become powerful. This is a natural law. Unity always triumphs over disunity. This truth has been stated by Allah in His book, and He told the believers: “Hold firmly to the rope of Allah all together and do not be divided” (Surah Al-Imran 3:103).
The greatest example of the power of unity is set by Islam. Before the advent of Islam, the Arabs were divided into numerous tribes and were involved in conflicts.
The Messenger (S.A.W) united them and established them as one Ummah. This unity was the driving force behind the progress and development of the Arabs. The Qur’an describes unity as being “like a solid cemented structure” (Surah As-Saff 61:4) and condemns those who break unity.
Thus, from the perspectives of history, religion, and reality, it has been repeatedly proven that unity is true strength. Disunity always leads to weakness and downfall. History offers many examples where nations achieved victory through unity.
This spirit of unity is evident in the society of pre-Islamic Arabia (Jahiliyyah), where the Messenger (S.A.W) united, divided, and conflicted tribes into one nation. This unity was the cornerstone of Islam’s advancement. That is why Allah has ordained that believers pray together in mosques under one Imam five times a day, as training in unity and discipline.
He established Friday congregational prayer (Jumu'ah) once a week to bring the community together. Once a year,
He prescribed Hajj, where Muslims from across the world gather at the Kaaba, regardless of language, race, or region. These rituals are divinely instituted processes to ensure unity. In addition, Allah has given symbolic elements that reflect Muslim unity – such as the Kaaba, which is the symbol of Muslim solidarity.
Allah says: “And remember, We made the Kaaba a place of return and a safe sanctuary for mankind” (Surah Al-Baqarah 2:125).
Today, despite being nearly two billion in number, with over 55 Muslim-majority countries and immense natural and economic resources, Muslims remain oppressed, persecuted, and weak. The Muslim world today faces war and conflict, with nearly 80 million displaced. A brutal genocide is ongoing in Palestine.
The root cause of all this is their disunity. Due to the lack of unity, Muslims today are victims of subjugation and exploitation. Now, for the protection of their national security and dignity, Muslims have no option but to unite. But the question is – who will bring this vast nation together under the banner of unity?
Who will lead this unity?
