Hezbut Tawheed has issued a stark warning of a potential war-like situation if the administration fails to address escalating
threats and
attacks. The non-political movement made this declaration at a press conference held on
September 10 at the Bangladesh Crime Reporters Association (CRAB).
During the conference,
Hezbut Tawheed’s Information Secretary, SM Shamsul Huda, Spokesman Md. Moshiour Rahman, and Dhaka Division President Dr. Mahbub Alam Mahfuz detailed the mounting
threats. They reported that on September 7, a religious
extremist group announced plans to attack over 400 families in Porkara village, Sonaimuri, Noakhali District. The
extremist’ targets include homes, schools, mosques, and various development projects established by Hezbut Tawheed.
The
extremists, posing as aid distributors for flood relief, reportedly made provocative statements during a gathering near the residence of
Hezbut Tawheed’s leader,
Hossain Mohammad Salim. They issued an ultimatum to evict
Hezbut Tawheed from Noakhali by September 15, threatening violence and destruction if their demands are not met.
A video shown at the press conference captured
extremist leaders making
threats and warnings to the police, asserting their capacity to resist any opposition.
Immediate legal action against those making
threats and provocative statements.
Measures to address
threats against their Dhaka office and ongoing local incitement.
Md. Moshiour Rahman criticized the authorities’ inaction, emphasizing that
Hezbut Tawheed has endured 30 years of oppression and will not tolerate further
threats. He asserted their right to self-defense and warned of severe consequences if forced to protect themselves.
The press conference also referenced a 2016 attack on
Hezbut Tawheed’s Imam’s house in Chashirhat, Sonaimuri,
which resulted in severe injuries to 114 individuals and the murder of two members.
Following the government’s fall on August 5,
extremists attacked over two hundred
Hezbut Tawheed followers’ homes in nearby Bipulasar. This violence endangered over four hundred women, children, and elderly people, leading to looting and burning of homes. Coordinated attacks also targeted
Hezbut Tawheed offices in districts including Kishoreganj, Pabna, Sunamganj, Sherpur, Rangpur, Kushtia, and Lakshmipur.
