Human Chain and Protest Against Alleged Defamation, Threats, and Incitement by Hefazat-e-Islam Targeting Hezbut Tawheed in Noakhali

Dhaka, 2 August 2026: Dhaka Metropolitan Hezbut Tawheed organized a human chain and protest rally today, Saturday, at 11:00 AM in front of the National Press Club to protest what it described as false propaganda, public threats, and inflammatory statements made against Hezbut Tawheed under the banner of Hefazat-e-Islam in Noakhali. The program was organized in response to statements made against Hezbut Tawheed during a rally held under the banner of Hefazat-e-Islam at Noakhali Zilla School Ground on 1 August.

The keynote address was delivered by Dr. Mahbub Alam Mahfuz, President of Dhaka Metropolitan Hezbut Tawheed and Joint Secretary General of the Central Committee. Other speakers included Md. Mashiur Rahman and S. M. Shamsul Huda, Joint Secretaries General of the Central Committee; Mokhlesur Rahman Sumon, Student Welfare Secretary of Dhaka Metropolitan; and Ayesha Siddika, Joint Women's Affairs Secretary, among others.

The speakers alleged that the gathering organized under the banner of Hefazat-e-Islam by a group centered around Qawmi madrasas, under the guise of an Islamic religious assembly, was an extremist and provocative event. They claimed that it had been deliberately organized to disrupt the peaceful environment of Noakhali. According to the speakers, completely baseless, false, and fabricated allegations were made against Hezbut Tawheed, along with public threats to bury, evict, and expel its members from the country. They further alleged that misogynistic and hate-filled remarks were made, using religious sentiments to incite violence against what they described as a lawful and law-abiding movement.

The speakers stated that such incitement poses a serious threat to the lives, property, homes, and security of Hezbut Tawheed members. Recalling the 2016 attack on the village home of Honorable Imam Hossain Mohammad Selim in Sonaimuri—during which they said two members were killed, homes were set on fire, and widespread destruction occurred—they expressed concern that similar violence could occur again.

The speakers called upon the government to take immediate legal action against those responsible for making public threats, inciting violence, spreading false propaganda, and delivering derogatory remarks against women. They also urged the authorities to ensure the constitutional rights, human rights, and security of the lives and property of Hezbut Tawheed members.

Following the human chain, a protest procession marched from the National Press Club through Topkhana Road. During the procession, participants chanted slogans against extremism, the exploitation of religion, and violent incitement, and demanded the immediate arrest and prosecution of those they accused of provoking violence.
